NAT Error (or F*** LIVE)

God fucking damn it.

By Leopold Stotch 4 years ago

Seriously, this is annoying as fuck. So me and my friends get the beta for DOWII and decide to play together. 1.) Matchmaking. Stupid in general, but this case beats them all. I invite one of my friends. He joins. i invite the second one, he gets some NAT error, which appears to be common amongst games for windows live games. after around 30 tries we surrender. Why the fuck can't we invite over Steam anyways? 2.) creating a game in the custom lobby. I host, i invite them. both get the nat error. so they start searching.... and thanks to this great system they implemented there is a.) no refresh button (WWWWWAAAAAAAAAAAGH), instead it refreshes at absolutely inappropriate times, resulting in losing the game you just had your eye on, and it never appearing ever again. This is completely randomized, like they wanna say :"You better use our shitty windows service or you can get ready to wait a while". and b.) no field where you can just enter the name of the game and join, as seen in for example WC3. In the meantime, i kept inviting and at some point one of them actually managed to join, the other one didn't. And thats it, we were frustrated and surrendered.

So there you go, if you want to ruin a game, implement windows live and let them run all network services. way to go.

So what is this thread for? Mostly whining, flaming, and venting. but also, are there any solutions to the NAT error?we all have our ports forwarded properly etc. I googled a houndred topics concerning this but nothing gave me an answer.

Thanks for reading this, and please don't be mad at me for wasting 10 mins of your life.

Then why is it completely randomized for us all? and what is DMZ?

    Insert witty quote here.

It's a router setting, go into your router controller/webpage and look for a page about it. Once you find it, enter your computer's ip(it's unique ip, not the network ip) and enable it.

It's not just Windows Live. I experience the same thing on CoH. I have a feeling it's something to do with the CoH engine (since DoWII runs on it), but anyways, listen to moses :3

DMZ is De-militarized zone, as named after the military meaning. Something to do with ports and such.

First major question for me is do any of you have a 1st gen BT homehub? As the person with that most probably will be the one who can't join if it isn't DMZ'd. I've had so many mates who couldn't join due to that POS (apparently 2nd gens are better, but eh, I don't know).

You're lucky you got it working at all. Despite what people keep repeatedly insisting (and I keep having to tell them they're wrong), GFWL stops me from playing the beta entirely.

    I hope you find a fix. I haven't.

Doesn't steam screw up in a DMZ? I heard that it wouldn't connect or something.

Steam usually runs okay in a DMZ, but you randomly won't be able to finish downloading some things from them. For example, you might be able to download Prey 100% and run it, but TF2 would get stuck at 89% until you turned DMZ off.
